Google Ads has been a major part of digital advertising for years. Businesses use it to reach people searching for products, services and solutions.

    But search behaviour is changing.

People are increasingly using AI tools to ask detailed questions, compare options and research before making a decision. Instead of typing a few keywords, they can describe their situation and receive a conversational response.

That shift is creating a new advertising opportunity through ChatGPT Ads.

OpenAI announced in August 2026 that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, with tens of thousands of advertisers using the platform. Advertising has also expanded to markets including India.

So, should businesses move their PPC budget from Google Ads to ChatGPT Ads?

    Not necessarily.

The better question is: which platform matches the way your customers search, research and make decisions?

Google Ads vs ChatGPT Ads: What’s Different?

The biggest difference is how people interact with each platform.

    On Google, someone might search:

“Best CRM software for small business”

    On ChatGPT, they might ask:

“I run a 20-person business and need software for customer follow-ups and sales management. What should I look for?”

The second question provides more context about the customer’s situation and needs.

This makes conversational advertising particularly interesting for businesses where customers spend time researching before buying, including:

    • SaaS and technology
    • B2B services
    • Consulting
    • Professional services
    • Education
    • E-commerce
    • Business software

OpenAI describes ChatGPT Ads as a way for businesses to reach users while they explore, compare and make decisions.

However, ChatGPT Ads are still a newer advertising channel. Businesses should treat them as something to test and measure, rather than an automatic replacement for established PPC campaigns.

    Why Google Ads Still Matters?

Google remains important for businesses targeting people who use search to find specific products, services and providers.

    Examples include:

    • “AC repair near me”
    • “digital marketing agency Coimbatore”
    • “website development company Chennai”
    • “buy office chairs online”
    • “commercial contractor Bengaluru”

These searches can represent strong commercial intent.

Google also has a mature advertising ecosystem for campaign management, conversion tracking, bidding and performance measurement.

At the same time, Google is adapting to AI-driven search.

Its AI Max for Search campaigns are designed to help advertisers reach relevant searches beyond traditional keyword targeting. Google reported an average 7% increase in conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS for campaigns using its full AI Max feature set. This is Google’s own 2026 data for non-Retail advertisers, not an independent industry benchmark.

So Google Ads is not standing still. It is evolving alongside changes in search.

Why ChatGPT Ads Are Getting Attention?

ChatGPT allows users to describe problems in more detail.

For example, a manufacturing company might ask:

“I want to replace spreadsheets with software that can manage inventory, sales and customer information. What features should I look for?”

That question reveals much more about the customer’s needs than a simple keyword.

For businesses, this creates an opportunity to reach people earlier in the research process, especially when the purchase involves comparison, education or consultation.

But conversational discovery does not automatically mean better conversions.

The only reliable way to know whether ChatGPT Ads work for a particular business is to test the channel and compare the results with existing campaigns.

Google Search Is Becoming More Conversational

The shift towards conversational search is not limited to ChatGPT.

Google has expanded AI Overviews and AI Mode, allowing users to explore topics and ask follow-up questions more naturally.

In May 2026, Google said AI Mode had surpassed one billion monthly users globally. Google has also reported that AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion monthly active users.

This suggests that the bigger change is not simply Google vs ChatGPT.

Search itself is becoming more conversational.

For marketers, understanding customer questions and problems is becoming increasingly important alongside traditional keyword research.

AI Search Is Changing Click Behaviour

AI-generated search results are also affecting how people interact with traditional links.

A Pew Research Center analysis of 68,879 Google searches from March 2025 found that users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when no AI summary appeared.

The study analysed browsing behaviour among U.S. adults, so these figures should not be treated as a global benchmark.

Still, the findings highlight an important change: businesses need to think beyond simply getting a website to rank.

Useful content, strong brand visibility, trustworthy information and clear product or service pages remain important as customers use both search engines and AI tools for research.

Should Businesses Move Their PPC Budget?

A sudden budget shift is rarely the best starting point.

Instead, businesses can continue running campaigns that already produce results while testing ChatGPT Ads with a controlled budget.

For example, a company spending ₹2 lakh per month on PPC could maintain its profitable Google campaigns while setting aside a smaller amount to test ChatGPT Ads.

There is no universal percentage that every business should move.

The right approach depends on factors such as:

    • Customer behaviour
    • Industry
    • Average order value
    • Profit margins
    • Conversion rates
    • Sales cycle
    • Customer acquisition cost
    • Business goals

The goal is not simply to generate clicks. It is to find out whether the channel produces qualified leads and profitable customers.

Measure Business Results, Not Just Clicks

CPC is useful, but it should not be the only metric.

    Consider two campaigns:

    Campaign A
    ₹60 CPC → 100 clicks → 5 leads → 0 customers

    Campaign B
    ₹150 CPC → 100 clicks → 8 leads → 2 customers

Campaign B has a higher CPC, but it may create considerably more business value.

    Businesses should therefore monitor:

    • Cost per qualified lead
    • Conversion rate
    • Customer acquisition cost
    • Revenue
    • ROAS
    • Lead quality
    • Customer lifetime value

A cheaper click is not necessarily a more valuable click.

    Your Website Still Matters

Advertising can bring visitors to your website, but it cannot fix a confusing landing page.

Before increasing your PPC budget, make sure your website clearly explains:

    • What you offer
    • Who you serve
    • Why customers should choose you
    • What makes your business credible
    • What visitors should do next

Your CTA could be Request a Quote, Book a Consultation, Schedule a Demo, Start a Trial or Buy Now.

The advertising platform gets attention. Your website needs to turn that attention into action.

This is why businesses should also invest in a strong digital presence rather than treating paid advertising as a standalone activity.

    Create Content Around Customer Questions

The rise of conversational search also affects SEO and content marketing.

Instead of targeting only a keyword such as “CRM software,” businesses can create content around real customer questions:

    • CRM vs spreadsheets: which is better for a small business?
    • How do I choose CRM software?
    • What should a manufacturing company look for in CRM software?
    • How much does custom CRM software cost?
    • When should a business replace spreadsheets?

This approach can make content more useful for both traditional search users and people researching through AI tools.

It also supports a people-first content strategy focused on answering genuine customer needs rather than simply adding keywords to a page.

A Practical PPC Strategy for 2026

Businesses do not need to choose one platform immediately.

    A practical approach is to:

    1. Review current Google Ads performance.
    2. Identify your most valuable customer segments.
    3. Understand the questions those customers ask.
    4. Set a controlled test budget for ChatGPT Ads.
    5. Define clear conversion and revenue goals.
    6. Compare qualified leads and customers from each channel.
    7. Adjust spending based on actual results.

This allows businesses to experiment without making a major budget decision based solely on the excitement around a new advertising platform.

    Conclusion

ChatGPT Ads are creating another opportunity for businesses as customers increasingly use AI to research, compare and explore products and services.

But that does not mean businesses should leave Google Ads behind.

Google remains important for capturing existing search demand, while ChatGPT offers another environment for conversational discovery. At the same time, Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode show that traditional search is changing too.

For businesses, the practical approach is simple: test, measure and learn.

Keep what works, experiment with new channels and focus on what matters most: qualified leads, customers and revenue.

The platforms may change, but the goal remains the same: reach the right customers and turn interest into results.
